About the EAT Section

You know it's true: you are what you eat. We want to explore not only what you eat, but how, when, and with whom. Hara hachi bu – the Okinawan elders' reminder to stop eating when your stomach is 80 percent full – is one of the guiding principles for this section.

On BlueZones.com, the EAT section is where we'll give you the scoop on practical ways to improve your eating habits. No two-week, all-protein, hollywood-celebrity diets here. Just simple, common-sense tips that you might actually stick with for the rest of your life. Ideas like pre-plating your food on salad plates, making high-fat snack foods a hassle to eat, and buying smaller packages.

We'll also talk about how you eat. Sitting down or standing up. Never in front of the TV, and hopefully surrounded by family or friends.

How much can I gain?

Eating until 80% full could help the average person live about eight years longer, according to sources which cite obesity as among the four major causes of death in the United States
